Are you tired of having bad hair days? Well, on October 1st, we celebrate National Hair Day. A day set aside to celebrate all the things that contribute to those good hair days. With all the hair care experts, products and techniques out there, one has to make personal choices that work best for them to keep their hair healthy, and always looking its best. With hopes of consistently achieving better hair days, let's take a little time to educate ourselves on some hair-health protocols that are suggested by doctors and knowledgeable hair stylists today. There are many factors that can impact the overall health of one’s hair, but today we will be focusing on the more commonly known issues that may cause hair loss. The most common condition of hair loss is clinically known as alopecia. In today's world of news and social media, we are hearing a lot about alopecia affecting both men and women.
We had the privilege of conducting an interview with Tammie K, a skilled master hair stylist of over 40 years, with a background in hair education, who was very helpful in providing valuable information, and facts on hair loss, and what can aid in the restoration of healthy hair & scalp. First, she clearly refers to stress as being one of the major factors contributing to hair loss. And according to HealthLine, there are three types of hair loss that are associated with high stress levels:
Telogen Effluvium (TE) occurs when there’s a change to the number of hair follicles that are actually growing hair. This thinning may not only occur on one's head, as it is often seen in patches on the scalp, and on other parts of the body as well. This type of hair loss is fully reversible though, and TE doesn’t permanently damage the hair follicles.
Alopecia Areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease. It develops when your immune system attacks your hair follicles. The hair may grow back and fall out repeatedly over a period of time. AA can affect men and women of any age, affecting over six million people in the United States.
Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder that involves the urge to pull one’s hair directly from the scalp and body. You can usually find this disorder in preteens in their development phase of life.
Stress, being a known issue in the lives of many, we know that the causes of stress vary with every person. Nutrient deficiency is yet another one of the most common causes of one’s hair loss today.
Nutrient Deficiency
The internet definition via merriam-webster.com, “Nutrient deficiency is the inadequate supply of essential nutrients (as vitamins and minerals) in the diet resulting in malnutrition or disease.”
One’s hair health and the overall efficiency, and functionality of the body, requires a set of essential vitamins and minerals. There are many ways to access what’s needed, but here are some key vitamins and minerals suggested for successful hair health & hair growth:

SOL: What supplements would you suggest to a client that may be experiencing hair loss?
Tammie K: “Usually I feel that a variety of supplements, and a good multiple-vitamin is a necessary thing, and then we take it from there. We usually ask them to get a full blood panel done, because they need to know what their body is missing. The B12 vitamin plays a big role, especially for women's hair, as well as biotin.”

SOL: Do you have any other comments on hair loss?
Tammie K: “People with blood health issues, such as leukemia, fibromyalgia, and lupus, are usually people that have an issue with iron. I see hair loss with that as well, and tell them that their food choices might not be the best, and they are usually not sure what is in the food they eat. I then tell them, you might want to try supplements. With the vitamins and minerals they provide, it is so important, and at least you are trying to help your body.”
