Hair Health: Care & Tips

  • 4 min read

With so many hair products out on the market, hair care can become an overwhelming debate about what products to use and when to use them. Many people can have their own experiences with hair care and products that can make them conscious of many things.

Because of this, let's note some important factors of haircare

  • Everyone has their own hair type - what may work for one hair type might not work for another
  • There are different ways to achieve healthy, shiny hair
  • Everyone has different hair care needs
  • Taking care of your hair based on your hair type & needs is the best way to achieve healthy hair

Everybody with hair is prone to thinning, hair damage, frizz, dryness, dullness, and breakage. It is no surprise that maintaining healthy hair requires some effort. With small tweaks to your hair care routine, maintaining healthy hair can become effortless.

Brush through your hair before you shower

No matter what your hair type is, brushing through your hair for at least 1 minute will help keep it strong. When your hair is wet, it becomes more vulnerable to breakage. Brush any knots out before you hop into the shower when it is dry. Brushing your hair also allows for the natural oils of your scalp to move its way down to your ends. Brushing your hair prior to showering will leave your hair smooth and ready to style as soon as you are done with your shower.

Turn down the temperature of your showers

As relaxing as a hot shower may feel, taking steamy hot showers can irritate your scalp and weaken your strands. Try keeping the temp on the warm side and finish with a cold rinse at the end. This allows your hair to seal cuticles, boost shine, and maintain healthy hair.

Get trims regularly

Getting regular haircuts ensures that your strands stay healthy and don't break. You don't have to chop all of your hair, asking your stylist to only get rid of only the damaged ends will maintain your hair length and goals. It is recommended to get a haircut every 6 to 12 weeks. If you are maintaining length get your haircut every 6 weeks, if you are trying to grow your hair out, opt in for a trim every 12 weeks.

Protect your hair from heat

Your hair needs rest from heat. Try to go natural as often as possible. If possible, allow your hair to air-dry instead of blow-drying it. If you must add heat to your hair, invest in professional hair tools with solid ceramic to minimize damage. This will distribute heat into your hair evenly so you don't need to go over a strand multiple times, creating more damage. If you plan to add some heat to your hair, remember to use a heat protectant beforehand.

Use the right products for your hair type

When buying hair products, choose products specifically for your hair type, whether that's dry, normal, or oily. Also, if you have chemically treated hair (such as bleaching, straightening, or a perm) then you should use shampoos and conditioners that are designed for chemically treated hair.

Eat a healthy diet

Healthy hair starts from within. Eating healthy fruits and veggies and keeping yourself hydrated may promote healthy hair. If you are someone who has a hard time with vegetables, try blending them up into a veggie and fruit smoothie for a yummy and easy way to get your nutrients. This will give your hair follicles the nutrients it needs for your hair to thrive.
