Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and its constituent, curcumin, have been used for their therapeutic properties for a long time. Most of the medicinal impacts of turmeric and curcumin might be attributed to their anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antioxidant effects. A study has shown, the preventive and therapeutic potentials of turmeric and curcumin, on inflammatory disorders and pain . Turmeric and curcumin can be applied as a supplementary therapy in inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoarthritis, psoriasis, dermatitis, and different types of pain including neuropathic pain.
Traditionally this root is used for the lower part of the body (below the waist) for joint stiffness, pain, and swelling. Pubescent Angelica is one of the main herbs for treating rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune system disease, that mainly affects joints throughout the body, causing joint pain, deformity, and even disability.
White peony root is traditionally used for various painful inflammatory conditions, pacify liver and costal part pain – this portion of the sentence doesn’t make sense. Research identified 115,327 patients who were newly diagnosed with fractures and associated soft tissue, tendons, and muscle injury. Those conditions weretreated with White Peony Root with positive results. In China, Korea, and Japan, a decoction of the dried root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall has been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, hepatitis, dysmenorrhea, muscle cramping and spasms, and fever for more than 1200 years.
Corydalis has been the number one herb for treating pain for thousands of years in Asia. It has been proven to work well in preventing inflammation, and improving blood circulation, hemostasis, and analgesia. A study designed to observe the effects of Corydalis in treating neuropathic pain showed Corydalis has therapeutic effects by ameliorating neuronal damages, improving intraepidermal nerve fiber loss, and inhibiting inflammation in treating osteoarthritis (OA) knee pain.
Gummi myrrha is mainly used to ease pain, aphthous ulcers, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, the common cold, and gingivitis. It also helps relieve arthritic pain, diarrhea, fatigue, headaches, jaundice, and indigestion.
Morinda Root Extract (MRE) is very beneficial for athletes at every level because it promotes the strength of the bones and skeletal system, allowing for strong anchorage of tendons and muscles. MRE is also an effective agent in the treatment of depression, osteoporosis, fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis, and infertility due to its anti-depressant, anti-osteoporosis, pro-fertility, anti-radiation, anti-Alzheimer disease, anti-rheumatoid, anti-fatigue, anti-aging, cardiovascular protective, anti-oxidation, immune-regulatory, and anti-inflammatory activities. Pharmacokinetic studies have demonstrated that the main components of MRE are distributed in various organs and tissues. Zhang JH, Xin HL, Xu YM, Shen Y, He YQ, Hsien-Yeh, Lin B, Song HT, Juan-Liu, Yang HY, Qin LP, Zhang QY, Du J. Morinda officinalis How. - A Comprehensive Review of Traditional Uses, Phytochemistry and Pharmacology. J Ethnopharmacol. 2018 Mar 1;213:230-255. doi: 10.1016/j.jep.2017.10.028. Epub 2017 Nov 7. PMID: 29126988. The neuroprotective effects of MRE involve mainly anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects , reducing lipofuscin levels in brain tissues, and thereby delaying the aging of brain tissue. MRE has been widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine prescriptions, and the biological effects of its active components have been confirmed in many studies. The findings of these studies have suggested that MRE may elicit multipotent neuroprotective functions through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Accordingly, MRE may have applications in the treatment of aging and AD – what is AD?.
Cnidium Monnieri supports an increase in sexual performance, improves your sex drive, prolongs intercourse, eases stress, and increases energy naturally, making it a great pair for Horny Goat Weed, Tribulus Fruit, and other herbal ingredients in this formula.
Studies have shown that fennel extract reduces pain close to a level that is provided by aspirin.
In traditional Chinese medicine, achyranthes is considered to be bitter, sour and neutral, and is associated with the Liver and Kidney meridians. Used raw, it promotes the circulation of qi and blood in an effort to restore menstruation and aid with difficult labor in women, because some of its components may stimulate uterine contractions. Typically, it is employed to treat amenorrhea, hematemesis and epistaxis.
Studies have reported various biological benefits of Eucommia ulmoides, including anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, antitumor, and cardiovascular-protective. Eucommia ulmoides has traditionally been used in China to treat back, ankle, and knee pain; in particular, the bark of Eucommia ulmoides has been used to cure arthritis. Recent studies have reported the effectiveness of Eucommia ulmoides against chronic inflammatory diseases such as osteoarthritis. Eucommia ulmoides also strengtherns kidneys, which provide energy and help with swelling.
I chose to add Sophora japonica (SJ) to this formula in order to help heal damaged blood vessels, in addition to treating pain & inflammation, because when tissue is first injured, the small blood vessels in the damaged area constrict momentarily, a process called vasoconstriction. SJ contains both anti-hemorrhagic and anti-hemostatic properties, and is used as a medicinal herb in China, Japan and Korea to treat bleeding hemorrhoids and hematemesis. Studies show that SJ reduces cerebral infarction partly because of its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory benefits. The studies found that SJ reduced the size of cerebral infarction and neurological deficits, and reduced microglial activation (hardly anyone will know what Microglial activation means. I would recommend trying to explain it in basic terms). The SJ flower is one of the richest sources of rutin, which is known to help strengthen and increase the flexibility of blood vessels, thus lending support to the benefits of SJ in the traditional Chinese medicine system. SJ flowers contain beneficial phytochemicals including rutin, quercetin, fatty acids, and polysaccharides and often appear in TCM formulas to regulate blood flow, tone the liver and kidney, and clear heat.
Rhizoma Curculiginis has a local effect on bone healing, as well astreating the common bone-related diseases such as inflammation, bone fractures, osteopenia, and osteoporosis and promoting bone formation. Rhizoma Curculiginis is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to strengthen kidneys, which creates energy in the body and reduces swelling.

Modern pharmacological studies have found that the main components of Chuanxiong Ligusticum include tetramethylpyrazine (Chuanxiongzin), ferulic acid, volatile oil, ligustilide, chuanxiong lactone and alkyl phenyl peptides such as butenolide. (I would take out everything prior to this note. Most people won’t know any of those words) Chuanxiong Ligusticum has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-coagulant, anti-depressant, anti-aging, anti-atherosclerosis, cytoprotective, and cardiac function improving effects. As a common clinical herb, Chuanxiong, promotes blood circulation, dispelling wind (most Americans will understand this to be talking about passing gas), and relieving pain from head to toe.
